## Keeping Your Bike Happy in the Tropics
Thailand's hot and humid climate is tough on motorcycles. Here are five essential maintenance tips to keep your bike running perfectly.
### 1. Chain Maintenance — More Often Than You Think
In Thailand's humidity, your chain needs attention every 300-500km:
- Clean with chain cleaner (not WD-40!)
- Lubricate with proper chain lube
- Check tension regularly
- Consider an automatic chain oiler for daily riders
### 2. Coolant Check Before Summer
Thai summers can push engine temperatures to the limit:
- Check coolant level monthly
- Replace coolant every 2 years or 20,000km
- Inspect radiator for debris (bugs, leaves)
- Consider a radiator guard to prevent stone damage
### 3. Brake Fluid is Hygroscopic
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air — a big problem in 80%+ humidity:
- Replace brake fluid every 12 months in Thailand
- Use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 as specified by your manufacturer
- If the fluid looks dark, change it immediately
### 4. Rust Prevention
Even stainless steel can corrode in Thai humidity:
- Apply ACF-50 or similar corrosion protectant
- Wipe down the bike after riding in rain
- Keep the bike covered or garaged when possible
- Pay special attention to electrical connectors
### 5. Tire Pressure and the Heat
Tire pressure changes significantly with temperature:
- Check pressure when tires are cold (morning)
- Thai heat can increase pressure by 3-5 PSI during a ride
- Don't deflate hot tires — wait until they cool
- Replace tires before the wear indicators, especially for rainy season
Follow these tips and your motorcycle will thank you with years of reliable service!
